A Legacy of Quality, Relationships and Craftsmanship

Constructing a Reputation Around Quality Construction, Enduring Relationships and a Willingness to Evolve with the Needs of Australian Homeowners.

For Bevnol Homes, building is about considerably more than bricks, timber and floorplans. Behind each project is a family business that has spent more than three decades developing relationships with clients, trades and suppliers while adapting to a changing residential construction market.

The company was established in 1989, initially concentrating on speculative homes and local real estate opportunities. Demand from local real estate agents encouraged the young company to expand, setting in motion the growth of the business that exists today.

The Bevnol name itself has roots in the company’s early history, originating from the road where land was purchased for the construction of two townhouses. What began on a relatively modest scale would ultimately develop into a diverse residential building operation.

For the Lane family, that growth also became a career path. One of the current owners joined the company in 1992, initially working as a carpenter across framing, lock-up and fixing work before progressing into site supervision, quotations and estimating. His brother followed in 1996, completing a carpentry apprenticeship before similarly moving through supervision, estimating and office-based responsibilities.

That hands-on experience proved important when the brothers, Brett Allain and Grant Allain took the next step in the company’s evolution. In 2018, they purchased the business from their father and Jamieson, assuming ownership of a company they had already spent decades helping to build.

Diversifying the Building Experience

Today, Bevnol Homes employs a team of 12 full-time staff and works across several segments of residential construction. Its capabilities encompass new and custom homes, knockdown rebuilds, townhouses and retirement villages, while rooming houses have emerged as a more recent addition to the portfolio.

That diversity allows Bevnol to work with everyone from families pursuing a dream home to developers undertaking multi-residential projects. Yet despite the differences between projects, the underlying approach remains centred on communication, attention to detail and accessibility.

Close communication between ownership and site supervisors is particularly important. Rather than allowing issues to move slowly through layers of management, the company aims to identify and resolve them quickly.

“If any issues come up, [we] find out about it straight away and we sort of resolve everything straight away,” Allain said.

That responsiveness reflects a company in which its owners understand construction from the ground up. Having progressed from carpentry through site supervision and estimating before becoming directors, they bring practical building experience to management decisions.

Technology Supporting the Job Site

While its foundation is traditional craftsmanship, Bevnol has incorporated technology to make construction management more efficient. Supervisors use ClickHome, cloud-based construction software that helps coordinate trades and suppliers and monitor site activity.

The technology has effectively replaced the folders and handwritten forward sheets once carried between sites. Supervisors can work from iPads, while orders, variations and plan changes are connected with the office and can be accessed quickly.

Technology is also changing how prospective clients experience Bevnol’s homes. The company has created 3D virtual tours of current and previous display homes, enabling customers to revisit designs long after physically walking through them.

Clients can examine colour schemes, reconsider layouts, and even measure rooms virtually as they develop ideas for their own homes. Importantly, the technology supports rather than replaces customization. Bevnol encourages customers to make plan changes and adapt standard designs around their individual requirements.

Although the company currently has two physical display homes, its virtual collection extends to approximately a dozen previous displays. Once captured digitally, those houses remain accessible even after a physical display has reached the end of its life.

Relationships That Last Decades

Technology may be changing how Bevnol operates, but relationships remain one of its most enduring competitive strengths.

Many tradespeople and suppliers have worked alongside the company for decades, with some relationships stretching back almost to its inception. Those connections provide more than continuity; they have become part of Bevnol’s approach to quality control.

“Because they’ve worked for us for a long time, they know the quality that we expect,” Allain said.

Experienced trades will contact the company when something on a site does not appear right, creating an additional layer of oversight. Maintaining the company’s reputation consequently becomes a shared responsibility across a network of trusted contractors and suppliers.

Bevnol applies similar thinking when choosing outside partners. Reputation matters, and the company wants to work alongside businesses that share its expectations. Long-standing external relationships can also generate referrals, with partners bringing their own clients to Bevnol or marketing Bevnol products.

Those relationships are mirrored inside the company. The directors describe a workplace that feels closer to a group of friends than a conventional employer-employee structure. Former staff remain part of that extended network, with past employees regularly joining social gatherings and sometimes returning to Bevnol when they or family members need a home built.

“We just treat our employees, subcontractors and suppliers with respect,” Allain said.

Employees also have access to experienced colleagues and company leadership when they need guidance rather than being expected to resolve difficult decisions alone.

Safety, Sustainability and Responsible Building

As expectations surrounding residential construction continue to evolve, safety and environmental responsibility have become embedded in Bevnol’s operations.

Occupational health and safety is treated as a fundamental responsibility, with random audits conducted across job sites to confirm requirements are being followed.

Environmental performance is increasingly important as well. Bevnol’s homes are constructed to a seven-star energy rating, while site waste is managed with an emphasis on diverting reusable material from landfill.

The company works with EcoTrans for site rubbish removal and clean-up, with materials including bricks, timber, masonry and metal recycled wherever possible. The objective is straightforward: minimize the amount of construction waste ultimately destined for landfill.

Rather than treating these areas as temporary initiatives, Bevnol has incorporated them into the everyday way its projects are delivered.

Keeping Display Homes at the Heart of Growth

Even in an increasingly digital marketplace, Bevnol continues to invest significantly in one of residential construction’s most traditional sales tools: the display home.

The company currently maintains two displays and continually looks for future locations. As estates mature and existing display villages reach the end of their useful sales cycle, typically after approximately 18 months to two years, Bevnol moves into emerging subdivisions and begins again.

The strategy keeps its offering aligned with changing tastes in design, layouts and colour schemes. It also recognizes that, for many customers, there remains no substitute for physically experiencing a potential home.

Social media complements that physical presence and has become an important generator of enquiries. Customers may first encounter Bevnol online before visiting a display home and meeting the sales team.

Repeat clients, developers, real estate agencies and professional referrals provide another substantial source of work. The directors estimate that roughly half of current business comes through past partners, existing relationships and associated referrals, with the other half generated through social media and broader marketing activity.

The balance says much about Bevnol’s position: digital marketing helps introduce the company to new customers, while relationships built over many years continue bringing people back.

Building for the Next Generation

Looking ahead, Bevnol Homes is not seeking to abandon the principles responsible for its longevity. Its goal is to grow while continuing to produce homes its team is proud to put its name behind.

There are opportunities to move further into larger and more upmarket properties, including acreage homes. A more ambitious display home is also part of the vision, demonstrating what Bevnol can achieve at the higher end of residential construction.

These projects appeal to the team because they allow greater collaboration with homeowners throughout the design and construction process.

“You get to get involved with the clients as well, and sort of we’ll have meetings with them and help them design what they want,” Allain said. “You can give them ideas, and it all sort of comes together so that you’re building something that they’re happy with in the end.”

Perhaps the clearest indication of Bevnol’s future, however, can be found within the family itself. Trent Lane has recently joined the company, working in sales and production estimating. His arrival effectively introduces a third generation to the business established in 1989.

For a company built on continuity, that milestone carries particular significance. Bevnol has evolved from speculative homes into a multifaceted residential builder, embraced digital technology and expanded the types of projects it delivers. Yet the qualities underpinning the company have remained remarkably consistent: communication, trusted relationships, craftsmanship and pride in the finished product.

“[Our objective is] to continue to grow the business, to be proud of building homes [that] reflect the people who live in them,” Allain said.

Whether the project is a custom residence, knockdown rebuild, townhouse development, rooming house or a larger acreage property, that philosophy provides Bevnol Homes with a clear foundation for its next generation.
