Building for Success for the Next Chapter
Constructed by Family Values, Investment in People, and Increasingly Sophisticated Technology
For TWS Evolution, evolution is more than part of the company name. It describes a business that has continually adapted across decades, expanding its expertise while holding firmly to the family values on which it was founded.
The company emerged from Ted Wilson and Sons, the business established by Rex Wilson’s parents. Wilson and his brother joined approximately 24 years ago, becoming part of a family enterprise whose history stretches back more than four decades. Over the past decade, its increasing concentration on commercial infrastructure development in the water and sewer sector prompted a transition to the TWS Evolution identity.
Today, the company operates across regional New South Wales, with several offices positioned within key markets. Its core expertise centres on the design and construction of water and sewer infrastructure, including servicing, greenfield developments and refurbishment projects.
Rather than competing in generalized pipeline construction, TWS Evolution has deliberately positioned itself around more technically intricate infrastructure, combining electrical systems, SCADA and PLC programming, control systems, pumping technologies and treatment processes.
“We are generally focused on more intricate cross-collaboration between the electrical, SCADA, PLC programming, control and then the pumping and treatment systems together,” Rex Wilson, Director of TWS Evolution, describes.
That multidisciplinary capability has grown from an electrical history spanning more than 45 years, complemented during the past 25 years by increasing expertise in pumping, hydraulic analysis and related infrastructure disciplines.
Legacy, Loss and Resilience
Behind the company’s technical evolution is a deeply personal family story. Ted Wilson steered the original business for decades before motor neurone disease took his life. For the family and the company, his illness and passing became a defining moment.
It forced TWS Evolution to consider not simply succession, but how a family business could become resilient enough to withstand the loss of a central figure without destabilizing everyone around them.
“Our father brought us all of the way as far as making sure that we’re accountable, making sure that we’re resilient,” Wilson states.
Those lessons continue to influence how the company operates. Wilson describes regional business as inherently cyclical, making adaptability essential. Understanding strengths is important, but so too is recognizing weaknesses and bringing in people whose expertise can strengthen the organization.

The Wilson name itself carries considerable weight. Although the business has transitioned from Ted Wilson and Sons to TWS Evolution, the connection remains unmistakable.
“Our name is our name. The Ted Wilson and Sons, the TWS and now TWS Evolution means a lot to us,” Wilson comments.
That reputation has become one of the company’s most effective growth engines. TWS Evolution undertakes little conventional marketing, instead relying heavily on its ability to deliver for existing customers and allow those relationships to lead organically to further opportunities.
People Before Projects
With a team of approximately 18 people, TWS Evolution concentrates its internal resources on design, project management, supervision and maintenance, while collaborating with specialist partners for selected construction activities.
Maintaining in-house maintenance expertise is particularly valuable because it gives project personnel exposure to what happens to infrastructure after commissioning. Understanding deterioration, maintenance demands and equipment life cycles helps the team make better decisions during design and construction.
It also supports one of the company’s enduring priorities: training.
For Wilson, investment begins with people. Recruiting suitable employees and retaining them has become increasingly challenging across the industry, making workplace culture, onboarding and professional development fundamental business priorities.
“Definitely staffing is our priority and then a suitable onboarding and then a training program,” Wilson states.
Some employees have even left the business to pursue other opportunities before returning years later with additional experience. Rather than seeing those journeys purely as losses, TWS Evolution values the expertise people can bring back with them.
Family remains central to the culture, extending beyond members of the Wilson family to the wider team. Local hiring is also important, with the company drawing on regional talent around individual projects wherever possible.
“The strengths that we’re needing to mainly focus on haven’t really changed. Family first and then making sure that everyone’s getting looked after from that point,” Wilson expands.
Infrastructure Thinking Beyond Tomorrow
The infrastructure sector is undergoing profound change, and Wilson believes the timeframe for decision-making must expand accordingly. Water security, wastewater management, population requirements and environmental pressures mean infrastructure owners can no longer think only about the next decade.
“Everybody’s in a very similar process whereby we’re all needing to now look not just 10 years ahead, 20 years ahead, we’re needing to look 30, 40 plus years ahead.”
— Wilson
For TWS Evolution, this creates opportunities across mining, commercial, industrial, residential and local government markets, although each sector brings different priorities.
Mining operators may seek efficiency, water reuse and reduced hands-on intervention. Commercial customers are frequently focused on financial performance and operating costs. Residential and government markets are becoming increasingly informed about filtration, treatment, public health and environmental expectations.

The common requirement is increasingly intelligent infrastructure: systems that use less energy, require more strategic maintenance and provide operators with greater visibility over performance.
Smarter Systems, Lower Energy
Technology is consequently becoming inseparable from infrastructure design. Energy efficiency, in particular, has moved from an advantage to an expectation.
TWS Evolution is exploring efficiency through motor operation, pumping controls and electronic systems while incorporating renewable energy where appropriate. Solar can be integrated into infrastructure through building-mounted, surface-mounted or ground-mounted systems, helping offset operational energy consumption.
Construction itself presents opportunities for greater efficiency. Reusing or recycling materials on site can reduce waste while limiting transportation, fuel consumption and disposal requirements.
Perhaps the most significant transformation, however, is occurring through automation, telemetry and remote monitoring. Pumping and treatment infrastructure can increasingly be observed remotely, giving operators greater insight into maintenance requirements, equipment life cycles and overall plant performance.
The integration of PLC and SCADA technologies can also connect previously standalone systems into multidisciplinary control environments.
“One particular control system is no longer only dealing with one particular component of the plant, but they’re overriding, and they’re taking all that information in from the different control systems,” Wilson says.
This enables operators to see the broader performance of a facility from one environment before drilling into individual systems, efficiencies or shortcomings.
Importantly, TWS Evolution does not believe in applying a universal technology package. The right solution depends on whether a client prioritizes profitability, longevity, efficiency, risk mitigation or a combination of factors.
Partnerships That Keep Infrastructure Moving
For a regional infrastructure specialist, strong supplier and manufacturer relationships are equally critical. TWS Evolution has worked with some companies for more than 40 years, providing continuity and access to expertise that directly supports project delivery.
“We are so reliant on quality suppliers and manufacturers,” Wilson notes.
Australian accessibility is particularly important. Infrastructure downtime can directly affect customers and communities, so replacement components, technical assistance and service capabilities must be available when required.
Remote access is helping bridge geographical distances, particularly in automation and electronic controls, but physical products still need dependable supply chains. TWS Evolution therefore remains selective about manufacturers and suppliers, looking beyond the initial purchase to consider ongoing service, replacement equipment, software updates and programming support.
In some cases, those relationships continue for years after construction through ongoing materials and support arrangements.
Accountability for the Long Term
As TWS Evolution looks ahead, Wilson acknowledges that even a two-to-five-year strategy now represents a substantial horizon in a rapidly changing industry. Yet the company simultaneously wants to ensure it is positioned for another 45 years.
People and training remain the priority, followed closely by technological advancement and energy management.
Increasingly, TWS Evolution is helping clients consider the total operating cost of infrastructure over two, five, 10 or 20 years. A higher upfront investment can make considerable sense when improved equipment or controls generate measurable savings throughout the asset’s operating life.
For Wilson, however, innovation ultimately comes back to accountability, one of the strongest principles inherited from his father.
“You have to remain accountable. You’ve got to be supporting all of those around you, but at the same time you have to go to work, and you need to do your job,” Wilson explains.
The company is particularly attracted to challenging assignments. Routine projects hold less appeal than work requiring technical creativity, collaboration and problem-solving. Some opportunities may arise only once in a career, and that sense of discovery continues to motivate the team.
Yet complexity can never become an excuse for compromising delivery. Whatever the technical challenge, the completed infrastructure must ultimately perform, comply and satisfy the customer’s requirements.
A More Personal Evolution
Perhaps the most significant evolution underway at TWS Evolution is not technological at all. Wilson describes his own leadership approach as increasingly focused on the individual, recognizing that employees bring their family lives, aspirations and pressures with them.
“The compassionate requirement of the business now compared to where I was 20 years ago is a very, very different place,” Wilson notes.
That realization has encouraged greater emphasis on personal goals, family engagement and understanding the people behind the work. For a company born from one family and strengthened by generations of relationships, it represents a natural extension of its history.
TWS Evolution may continue adopting smarter controls, more efficient pumping technologies, renewable energy and increasingly integrated infrastructure, but its direction remains anchored by principles established decades ago: stay accountable, keep learning, value people and never become afraid to adapt.
In an infrastructure market that demands increasingly sophisticated answers to increasingly complex challenges, evolution is not simply how the company describes itself. It is how TWS Evolution intends to remain relevant for generations to come.
