Building with Experience, Focused on Innovation

A Legacy Built on Adaptation

The story of Supa Group is one of reinvention, resilience, and a commitment to doing things differently. Established in 1974 by founder Frank Way, the company carved out a niche in the Australian construction industry by focusing exclusively on home extensions and renovations rather than new builds. It was a strategy that would prove remarkably successful, allowing the business to become a trusted name among homeowners seeking to expand and improve their living spaces.

Today, more than five decades later, Supa Group remains dedicated to that original mission. The company specialises in extending and renovating homes, primarily working on properties built from the Victorian era through to the turn of the millennium. Their clients are families who have outgrown their existing spaces and are seeking practical, thoughtful solutions that allow them to remain in communities they love.

For Managing Director Neil Gardiner, the journey to leading the company was far from conventional. Originally serving as the business’s external accountant, Gardiner became intimately familiar with Supa Group’s operations and potential before ultimately purchasing the company in 2014.

“It was such a good business,” Gardiner says. “Frank had been trying to sell the business for quite some time and was eventually considering winding it up. We had that conversation, and I ended up changing careers.”

That decision marked the beginning of a new chapter for both Gardiner and Supa Group. While preserving the company’s strong foundations and reputation, he brought a renewed focus on customer engagement and experience, helping position the business for continued growth in a rapidly changing industry.

Putting Clients at the Centre

Construction projects can be stressful undertakings for homeowners. Budgets, timelines, and the disruption of daily life all create pressure points that can affect the client experience. Recognising this reality, Supa Group has developed a culture built around communication, transparency, and trust.

For Gardiner, customer service is not merely a business objective; it is the company’s defining value.

“Giving our clients a good experience is really a focus of ours,” Gardiner says. “Eventually, it feeds through that clients understand we’re not here to do anything dodgy. We genuinely want them to have a good experience.”

This philosophy is evident throughout the organisation. Unlike many construction businesses where senior leaders rarely interact with customers after contracts are signed, Gardiner maintains a hands-on approach. Regular communication, follow-up calls, and personal engagement have become hallmarks of the company’s service model.

“I think I’ve brought a far more focused culture on client experience to the company,” Gardiner says. “All the staff here are on board with that.”

The result is a business that views every project not simply as a construction job, but as a long-term relationship. Clients are treated as partners throughout the process, creating a sense of confidence that extends well beyond project completion.

Transforming Homes, One Family at a Time

Supa Group currently completes between 40 and 45 projects each year, with an average contract value ranging from AUD$400,000 to AUD$500,000. The company typically undertakes four projects each month, allowing it to maintain quality standards while ensuring each client receives the attention they deserve.

The nature of those projects has evolved. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, second-storey roof insert extensions were particularly popular. Today, demand has shifted toward ground-floor extensions, open-plan living spaces, kitchen renovations, and master bedroom additions.

Gardiner sees this change as reflective of broader lifestyle trends.

“There has been a subtle shift over time in our product type, the type of extensions that we’re doing, and the type of clients that we are attracting,” Gardiner says.

Increasingly, homeowners are prioritising lifestyle enhancements over simple space expansion. Rather than moving house, families are choosing to invest in creating more functional, comfortable, and personalised living environments within their existing homes.

This trend has positioned Supa Group perfectly. By concentrating solely on renovations and extensions, the company has developed deep expertise in understanding the complexities of working within existing structures while minimising disruption to homeowners.

Navigating a Changing Industry

The construction sector has experienced significant change in recent years, driven by rising costs, evolving regulations, and increasing expectations around sustainability and accessibility.

One of the most significant developments has been the introduction of updated National Construction Code requirements in Australia. New regulations have introduced higher energy efficiency standards and accessibility measures, fundamentally changing how homes are designed and built.

“There was quite a big change with the 2022 issue of the National Construction Code,” Gardiner explains. “It added anywhere between $30,000 and $50,000 to every one of our extensions.”

While these changes have increased costs, they have also improved building performance and quality. Homes are now better insulated, more energy efficient, and designed with greater consideration for long-term usability.

At the same time, the industry has faced substantial inflationary pressures. The average extension project that cost between AUD$250,000 and AUD$300,000 just five years ago now commands significantly higher investment levels. Supa’s average projects range between $400,000 to $450,000.

Despite these challenges, Supa Group has continued to adapt, helping clients navigate complex regulatory environments while maintaining quality outcomes.

The Power of Strong Partnerships

No construction company operates in isolation. Success depends heavily on a reliable network of suppliers, subcontractors, and industry partners capable of delivering quality materials and services on schedule.

For Supa Group, these relationships proved invaluable during the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. As supply chains struggled and building materials became increasingly difficult to source, trusted suppliers stepped up to ensure projects could continue.

“Those supplier relationships have been absolutely key to us,” Gardiner says.

Timber supplier Bowens played a particularly important role, guaranteeing supply during a period when shortages threatened construction schedules across the country. Similarly, truss manufacturer TrussTech provided critical support when other suppliers were unable to meet demand.

These experiences reinforced an important lesson: strong business relationships built over time can become a competitive advantage during periods of uncertainty.

Today, Supa Group continues to nurture these partnerships, recognising that reliable suppliers are essential to delivering consistent results for clients.

Embracing Technology for the Future

While construction remains a hands-on industry, technology is playing an increasingly important role in driving efficiency, communication, and project management.

Over the past decade, Supa Group has embraced digital transformation across multiple areas of the business. From sales and marketing platforms to job costing systems and project management tools, technology now supports virtually every aspect of operations.

“We use technology a lot more in the business now than we did 10 years ago,” Gardiner says. “There’s a lot fewer spreadsheets hanging around.”

The company is currently implementing Evolve, an AI-powered accounts payable platform designed to streamline invoice processing and purchasing functions. By leveraging optical recognition technology and automated workflows, the system is expected to improve efficiency and reduce administrative workload.

Meanwhile, project management platforms such as Smartsheet provide real-time visibility for both staff and clients. Homeowners can track progress, receive updates, and maintain visibility throughout the construction journey.

This commitment to innovation demonstrates Supa Group’s willingness to evolve while remaining focused on its core objective: delivering exceptional client experiences.

Measuring Success Through Referrals

Many businesses measure success through revenue growth or project volume. For Gardiner, however, the most meaningful indicator of performance is something far more personal.

Referrals.

Whenever a new lead enters the business, Supa Group carefully tracks how that enquiry originated. Whether it comes through digital marketing, signage, or online search, the company pays particular attention to referrals from previous clients and industry contacts.

“Sales from referrals is the absolute key measure of success,” Gardiner says.

When Gardiner acquired the business in 2014, approximately 20 per cent of projects originated through referrals. Today, that figure has risen to over 50 per cent, and his ambition is to push it even higher.

“Ultimately, I’d like to get it to two-thirds of every new project comes from referrals,” Gardiner says.

This goal reflects the company’s broader philosophy. Referrals cannot be purchased. They are earned through trust, positive experiences, and consistently delivering on promises.

For Supa Group, every satisfied client becomes a potential ambassador for the brand.

Standing Behind Every Project

Construction projects do not end when the final handover takes place. At least, not at Supa Group.

One of the company’s defining strengths is its commitment to ongoing support and warranty obligations. Clients receive follow-up communication after project completion, ensuring any outstanding issues are identified and resolved promptly.

“Half of life’s turning up and the other half is following up,” Gardiner says.

The company conducts follow-up visits three months after project completion and provides extensive warranty coverage, including a two-year defect warranty and a 10-year structural warranty.

Importantly, clients know the company will be there when needed.

“We’ve been around for 52 years now,” Gardiner says. “Part of the reason why we still are around is that we do attend to all of those things.”

In an industry where some businesses come and go, that longevity provides valuable reassurance. Homeowners can feel confident that the company standing behind their extension today will still be there years into the future.

Building the Next Chapter

As Supa Group looks ahead, growth is not simply about increasing project numbers. Instead, the focus is on refining operations, improving efficiency, and delivering even greater value to clients.

Gardiner understands that sustainable growth requires balance. The company deliberately manages project volume to ensure teams can maintain quality standards and provide personalised service. Expansion for its own sake is not the goal.

Rather, success lies in becoming better at what they already do exceptionally well.

That means reducing rework, improving timelines, embracing new technology, strengthening supplier relationships, and continuing to cultivate a culture centred on customer experience.

Most importantly, it means maintaining the trust that has defined the company for more than half a century.

In an era where homeowners have countless options, Supa Group’s greatest advantage may be its unwavering commitment to relationships. Every extension represents more than additional square metres; it represents a family’s aspirations, investment, and future.

For 52 years, Supa Group has helped bring those aspirations to life. Judging by its continued evolution, strong leadership, and customer-first philosophy, the company is well-positioned to continue doing so for decades to come.
