Building on a Foundation of Relationships
This Dynamic Builder Is Strengthening Its Position in Luxury Custom Homes While Remaining Firmly Committed to Craftsmanship, Community, and Long-Lasting Relationships
For Lowe Design & Build, completing a home has never meant the relationship with the client ends. The family-owned company traces its beginnings back more than 40 years, when the father of its current second-generation leader and Managing Director, Matt Lowe, established the business. Matt joined the business at 18 years old and has now spent more than 25 years helping guide its evolution.
Today, Lowe Design & Build operates as a comprehensive design-and-build company, bringing design, town planning, interior design, feasibility work, construction, landscaping and pools together within an end-to-end offering. Rather than requiring clients to coordinate multiple providers, the company manages the journey from the earliest concepts through delivery and beyond.
“We’re a complete turnkey business, and we manage everything end-to-end,” Matt says.
That philosophy continues after owners receive their keys. The Lowe Home Servicing initiative provides maintenance, inspections, washdowns and other services that become increasingly important as a property ages.
“We stand by our product for the life of the product,” Matt says. “It’s something that we’re really passionate about.”
The approach reflects a broader philosophy that has shaped the business across generations. Lowe Design & Build is deliberately not pursuing volume for volume’s sake.
“We focus on quality over quantity,” Matt relays. “We’re not trying to be the next high-volume business. We just want to keep doing it better.”
Milestones Built Around People
Reaching the company’s 40th anniversary provided an opportunity to celebrate not only longevity, but the relationships responsible for it. Lowe Design & Build marked the milestone with an event attended by past clients and staff, including clients who have remained connected through ongoing home servicing, referrals to friends and family, and subsequent building and investment projects.
The business has also enjoyed recognition through numerous industry awards in recent years, while strategically expanding its presence in the luxury single-dwelling market, and recently won the 2026 HIA Eastern Victoria Home of the Year for our Portsea residence
Historically recognised for its medium-density projects, Lowe Design & Build has spent the past three to four years demonstrating that its capabilities translate naturally into individually designed luxury homes. The strategy has already produced award-winning projects and given its team opportunities to work on increasingly ambitious properties. Most recently, Lowe Design & Build’s Portsea Residence, a luxury coastal home designed for multigenerational living, was named the 2026 HIA Eastern Victoria Home of the Year.

Another milestone has been the longevity of Lowe Design & Build employees. With an in-house team of 31 people, including construction management, the company has celebrated staff reaching 10, 15 and 20 years of service.
That retention reflects a culture Matt describes as highly collaborative, accountable and notably free of ego.
“There’s a lot of humility across the teams,” Matt notes.
Continuous improvement is equally important. Annual planning days complement the day-to-day collaboration between disciplines, while designers and construction professionals share an appreciation for what the other brings to each project.
“Our build team appreciates the designs we produce and our design team really appreciates the way in which those designs are executed and the craftsmanship and the passion that goes into producing the product,” Matt expands.
Partnerships Across Generations
Long-term relationships extend beyond Lowe Design & Build employees and homeowners to the trades, subcontractors, and suppliers supporting its projects.
Some connections stretch back decades. Matt remembers visiting the company’s cabinetmaker as a child while accompanying his father to the workshop. That relationship has endured for approximately 35 of the company’s more than 40 years.
“To me, they’re part of the family,” Matt states.
Lowe Design & Build has also played a role in helping smaller contractors establish themselves. Matt recalls giving a young plumber one of his first significant opportunities and offering advice as he developed his business. Lowe Design & Build was similarly among the early clients of Melbourne-based Lockup Scaffolding.
“I feel really proud to be part of his story as well,” Matt describes when referencing the plumber’s subsequent growth.
The company prioritises working with quality local suppliers, particularly businesses based around southeast Melbourne and Bayside, rather than building its model around importing large quantities of materials.
For Lowe Design & Build, these relationships offer consistency, communication and accountability while keeping the company closely connected to the community in which it operates.
Elevating the Custom Home Offering
Lowe Design & Build’s move further into luxury custom homes has involved targeted investment rather than wholesale reinvention.
The company prepared its teams and processes, invested in marketing, and recruited people with experience in the luxury segment. More recently, it expanded its design capabilities through architectural collaboration.
Approximately 80 percent of Lowe Design & Build’s design work remains fully in-house, according to Matt. However, selected projects can now incorporate an architect working alongside Lowe Design & Build’s existing design team.
The approach is particularly suited to unique or landmark sites, legacy properties, and passion projects where an additional architectural perspective can elevate the result.
“We just saw a need to build on that design capability and be able to provide clients with particular locations or sites the extra opportunity to have an architect join our design team,” Matt says.
It represents an evolution of the company’s established model rather than a departure from it: adding expertise where it creates value while preserving the integrated approach that has defined Lowe Design & Build.
Navigating a Changing Market
Like the wider construction industry, Lowe Design & Build is operating against a more complicated economic backdrop. Matt sees property values as an important barometer for construction activity because confidence in land values influences people’s willingness to build or redevelop.

Higher construction costs, borrowing conditions, interest rates and broader cost-of-living pressures have also required consumers to adjust their expectations around what new homes cost to deliver.
“I think the consumer is still coming to terms with what it now costs to build new product on your site,” Matt notes.
Although high-net-worth clients can be less exposed to those pressures, they represent only part of Lowe Design & Build’s market. For the industry more broadly, Matt expects the process of economic recalibration to continue.
At the same time, he sees a major long-term opportunity in Australia’s ageing population.
Baby boomers are increasingly looking for homes that better match the next phase of their lives. Some want to downsize into luxury townhouses or custom homes. Others want substantial multigenerational properties that allow them to age in place while accommodating children and grandchildren.
Lowe Design & Build is seeing these requirements particularly in lifestyle destinations around Bayside and the Mornington Peninsula. Low maintenance, security and “lock-and-leave” convenience are important, while the company’s home servicing offering means owners can outsource ongoing property care.
“The biggest opportunity still lies in our ageing population and being able to cater to what they need moving forward,” Matt notes.
Bayside Roots, Enduring Homes
Looking ahead, Lowe Design & Build’s ambitions are deliberately measured. The objective is not dramatic expansion but continued improvement and securing the kinds of projects where its experience can make the greatest difference.
Matt remains a hands-on leader, something he considers important with a team of fewer than 40 people. Maintaining close connections across the company allows its direction and expectations to remain clear.
Geography is equally important to Lowe Design & Build’s identity. With deep roots in Bayside and considerable experience in coastal construction, the company sees beachfront, Beach Road and Mornington Peninsula properties as areas where its knowledge is particularly valuable.

“We are committed to building enduring homes,” Matt confirms.
Achieving that means avoiding complacency despite four decades of experience. Matt continues researching products, exploring fresh design ideas and bringing the right people into the organization.
“Although the business is 40 years old, it’s not stuck,” Matt states. “It’s open to new ideas, out there researching, and always looking to set the bar higher.”
A Business Embedded in Its Community
Lowe Design & Build’s local roots are reinforced through substantial community involvement. Among the relationships Matt highlights is the company’s association with the Chelsea Men’s Shed.
That partnership has produced a particularly meaningful handover tradition. The Chelsea Men’s Shed creates cutting boards for Lowe Design & Build using timber from clients’ own builds. Each finished board carries both organizations’ logos and is presented to the homeowner at handover, connecting the project’s physical materials with Lowe Design & Build’s community commitment.
The company also supports the local fire brigade, sporting organizations and Rotary activities and has maintained a strong relationship with Family Life, a Bayside and Mornington Peninsula organization supporting families. Lowe Design & Build has undertaken fundraising initiatives with Family Life and donated a significant share of the profit from one of its developments.
For a company whose clients, employees and partners are concentrated within its surrounding communities, those relationships are integral rather than peripheral.
After more than four decades, that idea of connection may be the clearest thread running through Lowe Design & Build: between designers and builders, homeowners and trades, homes and communities, and one generation of a family business and the next.
The projects may be increasingly sophisticated, but the company’s underlying ambition remains straightforward—to build well, care for what it builds, and maintain relationships long enough to see those homes become part of their owners’ lives.
