Pure Wonder
Redefining Authentic New Zealand Experiences Through People, Purpose and Unforgettable Journeys.
There are few destinations on Earth capable of leaving even seasoned travellers speechless. Milford Sound, or Piopiotahi, nestled deep within New Zealand’s spectacular Fiordland National Park, is one of them. Towering cliffs rise dramatically from dark waters, waterfalls cascade from impossible heights, and ever-changing weather transforms the landscape into something entirely new each day. For thousands of visitors, it is the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.
For Pure Tourism Group, creating that dream is about far more than simply operating cruises or tours. It is about delivering moments that stay with people forever while protecting the extraordinary places that make those memories possible.
Led by CEO Becks Caswell, the company has emerged from one of tourism’s most challenging periods with renewed purpose, stronger values and an ambitious vision for the future. Built around the award-winning Pure Milford operation and strengthened by the acquisition of the iconic Nomad Safaris business, Pure Tourism Group is creating experiences that showcase New Zealand at its absolute finest while ensuring that authentic hospitality remains at the heart of every guest interaction.
As Caswell explains, the business is ultimately about people.
“We’re not in the business of creating transactions. We’re in the business of creating magical experiences.” Caswell says.
A New Beginning After Adversity
Like much of the global tourism industry, the company faced extraordinary challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. International borders closed, visitor numbers disappeared almost overnight, and many tourism operators were forced to rethink their future.
For what is now Pure Milford, that period ultimately became the catalyst for reinvention.
Although the business has existed in various forms for more than twenty-five years, changing ownership structures and evolving operations eventually culminated in a fresh start following the pandemic. Three shareholders acquired the business and chose not simply to rebuild what had existed before, but to redefine its purpose entirely.
The former Juicy Cruise brand became Pure Milford, reflecting a deeper commitment to both customer experience and environmental guardianship.
That transformation extended well beyond a new name.

It included extensive staff consultation, customer engagement, product refinement and a careful examination of how every interaction could better reflect the remarkable destination itself.
“We took the opportunity to really right-size what we wanted to do and what we wanted to bring to the market and to our customers,” Caswell explains.
The resulting brand embraces the Māori principle of kaitiaki—guardianship of the natural environment. Rather than simply transporting visitors through Milford Sound, Pure Milford seeks to educate guests about the landscape while helping preserve it for future generations.
That philosophy has become central to every decision the company makes.
Every Detail Matters
Visitors often remember Milford Sound for its towering peaks, abundant wildlife and spectacular waterfalls, but Caswell believes exceptional tourism is built through countless small moments that collectively shape the overall experience.
From the design of the vessels to café layouts, comfortable seating, food offerings and customer service, every touchpoint has been carefully considered.
The company’s modern catamarans were introduced in 2017 and reflect that philosophy perfectly. Elegant, comfortable and designed to maximise viewing opportunities, they allow the natural environment to remain the true star of the experience.
“We’ve spent a lot of time, money, effort, and love on the design of our boats, how they present to the public, and the aesthetics. We’ve tried to really connect many touch points along the way to make the experience as best as we possibly can,” Caswell says.
Guests can choose from a variety of ways to experience Milford Sound. Some self-drive before boarding a cruise, while others enjoy fully integrated coach and cruise packages. Scenic flights across the Southern Alps provide another breathtaking perspective, and those seeking the ultimate luxury can combine coach travel, cruising and flights into one seamless journey.
Private charters and helicopter experiences further enhance the premium offering, allowing visitors to experience one of the world’s great natural wonders in unforgettable ways.
Partnerships Built on Shared Values
Delivering exceptional tourism experiences requires trusted partnerships.
Pure Tourism Group carefully selects collaborators who share its commitment to hospitality, quality and authenticity.
Long-standing relationships with True South Flights and Scenic Coachlines allow guests to enjoy consistent service throughout their journeys. Rather than viewing suppliers simply as contractors, the company works collaboratively to improve the visitor experience continually.
Whether specifying modern glass-roof coaches or coordinating seamless travel connections, the focus always remains on exceeding customer expectations.
Caswell believes shared values matter just as much as operational capability.
“At the heart of what we do, there is a genuine love of people and a genuine excitement with sharing what we get to do every day,” Caswell says.
Those relationships help ensure every element of a visitor’s journey reflects the premium standard Pure Tourism Group has established.

Culture Comes First
For Caswell, outstanding customer experiences begin long before visitors board a vessel or climb into a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
They begin with company culture.
Since emerging from the pandemic, Pure Milford has invested heavily in developing a workplace built around kindness, respect, guardianship and an unwavering commitment to saying “yes” whenever possible.
Rather than placing unnecessary barriers between staff and guests, employees are encouraged to solve problems creatively while always putting customer needs first.
The philosophy reflects Caswell’s own leadership journey.
Originally trained as an accountant, she discovered her greatest strength lay not in numbers but in people.
After moving into hotel operations and later joining the tourism sector, she steadily advanced into executive leadership before becoming CEO. During the pandemic, she completed an MBA, viewing the difficult period as an opportunity for personal and professional growth.
“The secret to business is people,” Caswell says.
With approximately ninety-five employees now working across the wider Pure Tourism Group, maintaining that culture remains a central priority as the organisation continues to expand.
Expanding the Journey
The next chapter for Pure Tourism Group extends well beyond Milford Sound. In late 2025, the company acquired the iconic Queenstown operator Nomad Safaris, adding another celebrated tourism experience to its growing portfolio. With more than three decades of history, Nomad Safaris has earned an outstanding reputation for taking visitors deep into New Zealand’s rugged backcountry, exploring destinations such as Skippers Canyon and the historic gold mining settlement of Macetown.
The acquisition also introduced a range of complementary experiences, including quad bike adventures, snow transport and specialised track transport, creating a broader collection of products that allow visitors to experience New Zealand from entirely different perspectives.
For Caswell, however, growth is never about simply becoming bigger. Every acquisition must strengthen the overall visitor experience while preserving the personal connections that distinguish the company from larger corporate operators.
“We’ve formed this group called the Pure Tourism Group and our strategy is to grow so that we’re big enough to create value for everyone who comes into us, but not so big that we lose that connection and that hosting ability that we currently have,” Caswell says.
That philosophy reflects a careful balancing act. Scale creates efficiencies, investment opportunities and resilience, but maintaining an authentic culture remains non-negotiable.
“We never want to lose that magic,” Caswell adds.
Technology Supporting Hospitality
While unforgettable scenery remains the company’s greatest asset, Caswell believes technology will play an increasingly important role in delivering exceptional guest experiences.
Rather than replacing the human element, new digital tools are being introduced to remove friction from the customer journey and simplify internal operations.
The organisation is currently investing heavily in harmonising reservation systems across its expanding portfolio while exploring artificial intelligence and automation to improve efficiency. The objective is straightforward: spend less time administering systems and more time interacting with guests, developing products, and supporting staff.

“We’re on a technological journey at the moment around harmonising our systems and engaging with AI as much as we can to facilitate a more seamless experience for our customers and our employees,” Caswell says.
Because Pure Tourism Group has grown through acquisitions, integrating multiple legacy systems has become an important priority before introducing more sophisticated technologies.
For Caswell, the investment is less about following trends than about ensuring employees have the tools they need to focus on what truly matters—delivering memorable experiences.
Meeting the Expectations of Tomorrow’s Traveller
Modern travellers increasingly seek personalised, immersive and premium experiences, a trend Caswell expects will continue over the coming years.
Within Milford Sound, operational regulations naturally place limits on how much experiences can be customised. Scheduled departures and environmental protections ensure the fjord remains carefully managed for both visitors and conservation.
Even so, Pure Milford has developed luxury private charters aboard the elegant Gem of the Sound catamaran, offering guests exclusive access to one of New Zealand’s most spectacular destinations. These intimate experiences have become especially popular for milestone celebrations and special occasions.
Meanwhile, Nomad Safaris offers even greater flexibility, with private tours and bespoke itineraries allowing visitors to explore the South Island according to their individual interests.
Caswell also sees exciting opportunities to create entirely new experiences.
Among the ideas being explored are premium winter weddings set against the breathtaking backdrop of Milford Sound, where glaciers, waterfalls and dramatic mountain landscapes combine to create one of the world’s most unforgettable ceremony locations.
It is precisely the kind of experience that reflects the group’s philosophy of continually finding new ways to surprise and delight travellers while showcasing New Zealand’s extraordinary natural beauty.
Protecting New Zealand’s Greatest Treasure
Tourism contributes enormously to New Zealand’s economy, but Caswell believes its greatest value lies in something less tangible: inspiring people to connect with extraordinary places.
Pure Tourism Group sees itself not simply as a tourism operator but as a custodian of experiences that introduce visitors to the country’s remarkable landscapes, wildlife, and cultural heritage.
For Caswell, delivering on the promise created by Tourism New Zealand is both a privilege and a responsibility.
“I see our role as delivering on that promise and then some. We want people to walk away from us and just be like, ‘Wow, that was sensational,'” Caswell says.
Those words capture the essence of Pure Tourism Group’s ambition.
Whether guests arrive by coach, aircraft, helicopter or four-wheel drive, whether they are exploring ancient fjords, crossing remote rivers or discovering forgotten gold mining settlements, every experience is designed to create lasting memories while honouring the landscapes that make them possible.
